Financial Planning: A Catalyst to Improved Financial Resilience and Financial Well-Being

Financial Resilience Institute strengthens the case for financial planning as a pathway to improved financial resilience outcomes.

The Financial Resilience Institute has once again leveraged its Financial Health and Resilience Index Model to provide robust, data-driven evidence of the strong association between working with a financial planner, engaging in financial planning, and creating or updating a financial plan and improved household financial resilience outcomes.

Building on the findings of our Financial Planning: A Pathway to Improved Financial Resilience (July 2023) report, the Institute now provides two sets of time-series data and robust Index analytics that further strengthen and validate these important insights. Together, they demonstrate the powerful role that financial planning can play in helping households build greater financial health and resilience and long-term financial well-being.

Key Findings from the Report

We’d like to recognize our partner FP Canada for their support of this work. Our data provides clear evidence to support advocacy, decision-making and policy for the development of government-supported engagements with financial planning professionals to help more Canadians with low and middle incomes to access an affordable financial plan, along with the follow-up support needed to implement and adjust it over time. This data makes the case for why this is important and how it can help contribute to households’ improved financial resilience.

There is a clear association between households working with a financial planner and improved household financial resilience outcomes across every household income demographic, based on the Institute’s February 2026 Financial Health and Resilience Index Model and trended data.

Households that report planning ahead financially as a behaviour, and/or that report they have created or updated their financial plan over the past 12 months also have improved financial resilience outcomes. Additionally, people working with a financial planner have higher levels of financial well-being and overall personal well-being.
